Benefits of Open Source Software for CAP Sites

What is open source software? In short open source software is software coded by a community of developers and freely distributed for use and modification. This can be very beneficial to a CAP site, as there are many popular opens source alternatives to expensive software programs. For example rather that using an expensive office suite you could use Open Office at no cost. Open source programs are also frequently updated at no cost and are often backwards compatible with many commercial programs.

There is no reason why your CAP site can't have great software on a small budget. For more information on open source and to find programs to suite your needs, check out these links.

Success Stories from across the province

Jane Alliance Neighbourhood Services in Toronto, ON

The Jane Alliance computer lab has changed lives for many clients in different ways. The Clients are very appreciative of the services offered and the one & one assistants. At Jane Alliance we use effective communication skills to better serve our clients. One of our Clients that we assisted was Pauline B. she shared her story with us. At first Pauline came to our organization not knowing the services we offered or what we were about. We then explained to her of what we do and the services we offer. She was so impressed with what she heard she immediately registered with us. She told us that she was unemployed and she needed a job as urgent as possible. She was counselled by one of our employment counsellors and introduced to our job postings in the office. She then told us that she didn't have a resume and cover letter, so one of our staff assisted her with the typing of her resume and cover letter. After that we assisted her by faxing her resume and cover letter to some of our posting that she was interested in. Two weeks after, she phone and told us that she got a call for an interview from one particular company that she sent her resume and cover letter to. We ask her to come in to our inter skills and technique workshop to learn the pros and con of an interview. She came to our office for the workshop: after the workshop she was more than ready for the interview. The following day she went for the interview; she phoned right after and told us that she got the job and was complimented on her resume. Pauline is now working fulltime with the company and she has never been happier.

From Dubreulville, ON

Kingston Frontenac Public Library in Kingston, ON

"The CAP program altogether has been unbelievably welcomed. Before we even started there was at least a couple pages of a waiting list! Now, I have to book patrons up to two weeks in advance because I am constantly booked solid! People are so enthusiastic about learning and really want to come in and get as much time as possible with me." - Rebecca Ryttersgaard

Port Cares in Port Colborne, ON

"Technology is advancing and I find it important that people of all ages get to spend some time using the computer every day. Many of our clients don't have computer at home, and this experience has also allowed me to understand the economic condition people are in. Sometimes we have youth who come after school, and do homework and on-line research, I've seen mothers dropping their teen kids here to utilize the resources, and come back hours after to pick them up. Port Cares can be "A free and safe place" "
- Josias Rodriguez
