Hi Everyone! I hope everyone had a nice holiday season and that CAP sites around the province are gearing up for an exciting 2009! CAP has been hugely successful this year, despite the late start to the program. Few sites returned hours and it appears that the program will be running at full capacity in many communities all the way to the end date in March. For this issue of the newsletter activities in Networks 5, 7,and 8 will be featured. ENJOY! :)

Pinecrest-Queensway Community Health Centre's Millenium Leraning Centre held an afternoon computer workshop on December 12, 2008. Rania, PQ's Volunteer Instructor, taught the class while Nadia Roseway the site's Community Internet Trainer, acted as an assistant. The free workshop focused on Microsoft Word 2007 and it was open to the public. Despite the recent OC Transpo Bus Strike and severe winter weather, three of the ten 10 registered participants were able to attend. The class was small, but offered an opportunity to provide personal instruction on a one-on-one basis. This was especially helpful in the case of an attendee who had no experience using MS Word. The other two participants knew the program's older versions well, but were having a bit of trouble navigating the latest edition. The workshop started at 1:00pm and ran approximately 2 1⁄2 hours, interrupted only by a 15 min break. During the course of the session, the students learned the basics of MS Word 2007 such as saving files, exiting files, copying, pasting, deleting, highlighting text, and printing. Later on, they were introduced to lesser known functions such as inserting headers and footers, inserting pictures, and creating labels. Moreover, they were given a 16 page instructional handout created by Rania. Overall, the class was a success. The participants really enjoyed themselves, and appreciated the patient instruction, but they asked that the next workshop be punctuated by more breaks or possibly be cut by 30 min to an hour. At the end of the class Rania reminded both her students and Nadia, her assistant, to fill out the evaluation form provided at the beginning of the class.

The youth worker, Mila Branco, at the Mattice Val-Côté site has been very busy. On December 22 2008, they had a movie night for kids where 30 kids attended!!! She also has activities for kids on Monday nights and Wednesday nights between 6 and 8. She has a different theme each month, for example, last month was a Hockey theme, this month was Christmas, and next month will be Recycling. They had a picture contest at the library which they used to create their own bookmarks. People from the community were invited to bring pictures that represent the community of Mattice-Val Val-Côté. Afterwards, 3 judges had to pick the 3 best pictures that would appear on the bookmark with the hours and website on the back. =)

Here is an example of the bookmarks.

SUCCESS STORIES

1. Jared MacBeth from Walpole Island First Nation Elementary School sent in this success story to be included in this newsletter. A lady I have been working with has had some major breakthroughs. She can almost get into her email account and send an email by herself. I have to review the earlier lessons each time, but she has been making good progress. I have her on a Gmail account which her daughter uses too. During our lesson, her daughter used gmail chat to send her mom a message. Therefore, we had an impromptu lesson in how to use chat functions online. She really loved this. She was able to chat with her daughter in Ojibway. I am hoping to get some more clients interested in learning this kind of stuff. Great work Jared!

2. Vicki Enosse at the Wikwemikong Library At a recent cyber camp, Vickie showed her students youtube and commercials that other libraries had made. She then worked with her students to film and edit their own commercial for the Wikwemikong CAP site. After completing the library commercial she called the TV5 Organization - Gordie Ojig and asked if they could broadcast the commercial. He said yes with a fee of $60.00 he would play it 2 times a day for 2 weeks. Also he would have to put it on VHS to play on TV5. Congratulations Vickie- this is great news!
