Hello Cappers! I hope everyone had a HAPPY HALLOWEEN! With the program now fully underway it is time to share our resources, ideas and success stories. Each month the newsletter will feature different CAP sites around the province to help celebrate achievements made through CAP and to inspire other sites to create fun and interesting programs. Make sure you are also checking out the resources available on the cybercamp WIKI and posting things to the Webboard. ENJOY! :)

As CAP gets off the ground in many networks it is in full swing at the Hamilton Public Library. With a busy schedule of computer training workshops there is something for everyone at this site. The schedule can be viewed at www.myhamilton.ca/myhamilton/LibraryServices/AboutTheLibrary/ComputerTrainingPrograms.htm
Check it out!

Here is a breakdown of what to expect at these workshops.
Types of Workshops:
The workshops enable individuals to use the basic functions of a computer and to navigate through popular programs (i.e. Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel) and the Internet.
The list of programs are:

  • Computer basics (turning on/off a computer, file structure, etc.),
  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Web Wise (Navigating the internet)
  • Web 2.0 (a more advanced course of Web wise)
  • Google
  • Free internet/e-mail
  • Health information on the Internet
  • Cooking information on the Internet
  • eBay
  • Finding information on services offered by the government.

Target Audience: The majority of people who attend these classes are senior citizens and individuals new to the country. In terms of the age bracket, most of the students are middle aged

Number of Participants: At the central library there are ten computers available and usually about eight-ten people will be in the classes. At the Terryberry library, there are six computers available and usually about four to six people will be in the class.

Goals of workshop: The projected outcome of the workshop is to have all of the students walk away with a sound understanding of the lesson taught and that they have the confidence to use a computer in their everyday lives. They also try to assess their level of skill on computers and suggest another class that they could take to increase their knowledge on computers.

HALLOWEEN SUCCESS STORIES

Every Year theme events provide great CAP ideas. In the past CAP sites have run exciting Halloween themed camps including:

  • Halloween safety tips
  • Carving Pumpkin techniques
  • Cheap and easy Costume ideas
  • Paper Mache Pumpkins
  • Halloween themed web games
  • Halloween Candy and How it is Made
  • Chocolate Challenge
  • Halloween Loot Bags
  • Make your own Monster

Think about future themed events and how you can incorporate creativity into future programs. Everyone likes getting dressed up and being silly. Perhaps try to encourage costumes in another program. One site had a Harry Potter cybercamp where the participants dressed up as their favourite Harry Potter character. Costumes do not have to be reserved for Halloween alone! :)

Check out www.cartooncritters.com/funactivities.htm for fun online dress up games like "Dress up who"! You can design wedding outfits, give people make-overs, dress characters up for Halloween and redo Disney characters. This website is like paper dolls or Barbies online! This is a great activity for kids and is definitely in the Halloween spirit.
