Social networking Social Networking Graph

This issue is going to focus on some important technology issues relevant to current Canadian Society. By now everyone has probably heard of facebook, the social networking website, which is still rapidly growing. This issue will examine how this site works, what you should know about it and the importance of different safety precautions to be used as a facebook user. Additionally, we will investigte different cybercamps that address the overwhelming popularity of social networking sites. There are other popular social networking sites available, but facebook is one of the most prominent sites with its membership still rising. Currently there is 49 million current users on the site around the world and roughly 200,000 new accounts are created daily. Facebook use is now largely seen as a necessary pastime for young adults. The general attitude being that if you are not on facebook, you are missing out.

facebookwelcome
EXPLANATION OF A FACEBOOK PROFLIE: A facebook profile allows you to have an Internet page dedicated entirely to you. Wall posts appear on your public wall and an email notification is sent to the address you have listed (ie. Hotmail). My Profile- this links you to the ability to update any profile components including: basic info, contact info, personal info, education, work, courses, and picture. My Friends- this allows you to view all your friends. They are sorted by network, details and whether they have been recently updated. You can search by name within your friends list to find a specific person. By clicking on anyone’s profile you are instantly linked to his or her main page. My Photos- facebook has the ability to upload photo albums that can be shared with all your friends. You can post pictures that all your friends can view and have the ability to save to their own computer. You have the ability to “tag” each person on your friend list that appears in a photo. Photos that have been tagged of someone appear on their profile under “see more pictures of ____”. Everyone has the ability to ‘untag’ a photo so it will not appear on his or her own profile, but only the album creator can delete photos. Also, it is only possible for people on your friends list to tag you in photos. My Shares- this gives you the ability to share content from facebook or from any other website with your friends. You can post things to attach to your profile, send links or mass posts (ie. To all your friends) My Notes- this allows you to share stories, express your opinions or write about whatever you want- you can also do this using the text message feature on a mobile phone. You can tag friends within notes (ie. Mention their name and it will show up on their profile), use it as a blog or add photos to a note. My Groups- groups are listed at the bottom of your profile. Often groups are used to support a cause or as a petition for something. Some groups you must request to join or be invited to do so, while others you simply click join group and you are in. My Events- Anyone on facebook can create an event that is essentially an online invitation. You can post details about the event as well as a picture. People can then RSVP to events or decline. People can also post on an events wall. My Messages- this functions essentially as email. Unlike wall posts- these are “behind the wall” messages that only you can view. When you sign in you will see whether you have a message in your inbox. You can reply to messages you receive and you are able to send private messages to anyone, they do not need to be listed as a friend. To leave a wall post you must be listed as friends. My Mobile- these features allow you to use mobile devices to access your facebook account. You can send and receive messages, photos etc. My Account- this allows you to adjust settings, join networks (you can join up to 5 so once you graduate you can still be a part of your University network but also join another one), and update what notifications are sent to your email account. My Privacy- this allows you to control what people can and can’t see about your profile. There are however certain things you cannot hide which is why there is a lot of controversy about certain components of the facebook website.

Facebook: Social Networking Technology and Privacy Issues
Facebook challenges many established beliefs regarding online personal safety and the diffusion of information through a technological medium. There is an accepted awareness that people lie online, use deceitful practices, and take advantage of people through the veiled protection of online anonymity. However, Facebook positions itself as an attempt to reclaim the social possibilities inherent within the effectiveness and efficiency of the Internet, as it encourages participation in previously unsanctioned forms of online socialization, most significantly individuals communicating through their real names and revealing their ‘true’ identities. As of Sept. 26th 2006, Facebook was opened up publicly and now any email address is valid and you can simply join your city’s network. Prior to this, a valid email address from a recognized institution was necessary to create an account. Facebook was intended to be a site for college and university students, but now is available publicly for anyone to use. Rumours circulate that many employers check out potential candidates facebook profiles prior to interviewing them. There have been many scandals in the United States about high schools using information found on the website to get students in trouble, in some cases even leading to suspensions. It is important to be aware of the privacy stipulations within the Facebook agreement and users must be able to control the privacy settings on their accounts. There are 2 important disclaimers on the website that few users pay attention to are:

  • “facebook may share your information with third parties, including responsible companies with which we have a relationship”- this is listed in the user agreement
  • “we may use information that we collect about you that we collect from other sources, including but not limited to newspapers and internet sources such as blogs, instant messaging services and other facebook users to supplement your profile” If users are unaware of these clauses, it is evident that there is a significant amount of information about facebook users being poured into the public without their knowledge.

facebookhit Informaiton posted on Facebook about you may come back and "hit you in the face!" be careful with what you post on your profile for the world to see.

    Facebook as a Learning Tool
keyboard Everyone is using Facebook now as a social networking system. Facebook has become part of the culture of young people. There is a lot of information about the site’s users posted on the web and it is important to recognize what this means. Marketing opportunities, advertisements etc. are also another important component of facebooks success. FaceBook has three methods of producing revenue. Local text ads (from the college and local businesses), running at $15-20 per day, traditional banner ads, sold on a national basis, sponsored groups - examples included Apple, EA, etc. It was reported on Oct. 24 2007 that Microsoft bought 1.6% of the site for $240 million. Another significant learning tool within the site is Facebook groups. They allow mass communication and can create greater awareness about certain issues/events. The largely uninformed youth culture can now receive information through their pastime or hobby website. The use of facebook for petitions and campaigning has greatly changed the way youth culture organizes and spreads awareness about important issues. They want their voices heard. Youth want to feel like they are a part of what s happening in the world. Kids crave a sense of identity and being embraced by a group. Students want to be part of the crowd. They see social networks on the web as invitations to a party, as a way to meet people and keep up to date on what is happening in their world. Use of technology to stay in constant contact. It’s a way for younger kids to assert their independence, to identify with other people with similar interests. Many libraries are using social networks to reach out to their patrons, through online book clubs, literature circles, and other communication and collaboration rich activities connected with reading, writing, and information. Now CAP can get involved to!
